History of Garhwal & Raj Purohits Compiled
by
Major S. C. Nautiyal (Retd.)
King Bhanupratap was the King of one of the pricipalities in Garhwal ********************* having  its Capital at Chandpur Garhi in 887/888 AD
* ( The remains of CHANDPUR GARHI fort can still be seen in Chamolie District in between Karan Prayag and GAIRSAIN near Adbadri  )
*   (King Bhanupratap had only one daughter. He married his daughter to Kanakpal , who was the younger brother of the Panwar Prince of Dharanagari (the  ***capital of Dhar-Malwa which is in Madhya Pradesh). It is presently known as Ujjain.
 *  King Bhanupratap had grown old so he handed over the reigns of his kingdom to Prince Kanakpal  and went to Badrinath on a pilgrimage, thereafter he died.
*   King Kanakpal after taking over the reigns of this kingdom brought his Rajpurohit from Dhar Malwa ( Ujjain) and made him  Rajpurohit of his new kingdom in  *  *   Garhwal. The first Nautiyal family thus came to Garhwal from Ujjain.  The principal person was Devidas Neelkanth ji.

( Ujjain, is presently in *Madhya Pradesh and is bordering with Gujarat and Rajasthan,  therefore, some people claim that Nautiyals came from Gujarat.)
 *  The  Nautiyals, after some time, were setteled  in "village Noti"  situated on a hill  near Chandpur Garhi. After the rajpurohit some other brahmin relatives also  *   came to Garhwal and were settled down there. In addition to this there were Rajpurohits of King Bhanupratap who were already setteled on the nearby
 *  hills. *In  this manner the brahmins setteled on the hills near Chandpur Garhi were at Maithana, Khandura, Ratura, Thapli, Chamola, Sema, Lakhera, ***Gauroli,Sirguro,Koti  and Dimmar.
 *  The Panwar Kingdom kept on expanding and in 1358 AD King Ajay Pal of the Parmar dynasty ascended the throne of Chandpur principality. King  Ajay Pal  * ****succeeded in conquering and uniting all 52 Garhs or forts and becomes the first overlord of a united Garhwal. He transferred his court to Srinagar, which  ****persisted as capital until 1803. After complete unification, Ajay Pal, like Ashoka, developed a distaste for warfare and pursued a spiritual life.
